Name: Julia Stoops
Occupation: Artist, and my day job title is Digital Media Strategist
Birthplace: Western Samoa, to New Zealand parents
Your present state of mind: Relieved – it’s Friday and I’m all ready for a Monday morning client presentation!
Your favorite qualities in a person: Sincerity and idealism.
Your chief characteristic: A friend recently did that Jungian archetypes thing for me. Came up with Artist (well duh) Idealist, Seeker, and Maverick. I’m down with that. And I’ve also been told I think too much, which is true.
Your idea of happiness: Having no agenda.
Your idea of misery: When the world won’t bend to my agenda.
Your favorite food and drink: I eat like a peasant: very simple, vegetarian food and gallons of good green tea. Plus a nice gin and tonic or a decent scotch or brandy now and then.
Your favorite qualities in an artwork: Independence of spirit, and beauty.
Your heroes in art: Jonathan Borofsky, Fernand Leger, Hieronymus Bosch, Simon Rodia, James Hampton, Hilma Af Klint.
What did you hope to find when you moved to Portland? Community.
Did you find it? Yes.
How have you built your artistic practice? I have to make art or I become quite ungrounded. To continue making art in the face of the vicissitudes of life I’ve had to let go of certain expectations about outcomes. The right outcome boils down to: I don’t go nuts. And if other people get to see and enjoy what I make, then that’s a sweet, sweet bonus.
What art and artists should we be watching? I have no idea! Watch me, if you like. If you don’t, then go watch someone else. Better yet, stop watching and start doing. Every single person on this planet can make something from their heart.
What's next for you? Collaborating with the brilliant developer Cesar Delgado to create an installation with computer-generated projections on paintings. Our mutual interest in the torus shape is the starting point of our discussions.
