Dr. Mas Subramanian, a materials science professor and colleague of Julie Green’s at Oregon State University, recently discovered a new blue pigment – the first in over 200 years – which began appearing in Green’s paintings in 2015. By adding iron to this renowned YInMn blue pigment, he created orange.

The specific gossip bridle depicted was found when the Vilvorde prisons in Brussels, Belgium was rebuilt in the 1770s. Such devices were used into the early 19th century to punish women. This mask covers not just the mouth but the entire face, decorated with ears and horns. After painting a detailed rendering in acrylic, Green scumbled over with white and added glow-in-the dark paint to the bridle.

Green, who often wears red lipstick, recently learned that most cosmetic companies still use lead in lipstick. Lead is found even in Burt's Bees tinted chapstick (Burt's is now owned by Clorox). Red Apple Lipstick, Shisheido and Wet and Wild have little or no lead.

In 2017, stray dogs in Mumbai began turning blue. Ducol Organics, a pigment and dye factory, was flouting regulation and polluting the river and air. The shell motif border recalls Green’s Wallpaper project, which meditated on the nature of consumption, pollution and its affect on the ocean. Haystack Rock, an Oregon coast landmark, is also plagued with pollution; efforts are underway to protect its sensitive ecosystem. These incidents highlight our shared responsibility to protect natural resources.

The Radium Girls were factory workers hired to paint watch dials with self-luminous paint. From 1917-1926, female workers were told the paint was harmless and instructed to put the brush in their mouth, using their lips to get a fine point. Many contracted radiation poisoning and suffered chronic illness, disfigurement and death. Our fascination with glowing pigments continues, though contemporary examples such as Holbein’s Luminous Lemon gouache and day glow paints, used here, are presumably ‘safe’.

In a likely apocryphal story, Sir Robert Wingfield of Upton wrote that when the executioner held up Queen Mary’s head for all to see, he was unaware that she was wearing a wig, and so her head fell to the ground while her famously red hair remained firmly in his grip. The bewigged head is painted into the top edge, hidden in the eruption of Mount St. Helens.

In response to experiencing systemic racism and violence, Indigenous Bolivian began wrestling, performing with ample doses of bawdy humor, while wearing iconic, traditional skirts. Wrestling allows them to reclaim their bodies, challenge machismo culture and ideas of femininity. "For me," Green says, "there’s something so right about women wrestling in beautiful skirts in Bolivia."
